The Color of Quiet
12x16"
Throughout my residency at Whiterock Conservancy, I found myself returning to the ponds whenever I needed a quiet moment. They weren't silent places at all. Fish rippled the water, frogs called from the shoreline, dragonflies zipped overhead, and a chorus of different bird calls filled the air. Every now and then, another frog would leap into the pond as I walked past.
Those visits taught me that quiet isn't about the absence of sound. It's about being present enough to notice them. Sitting beside the pond, I found myself listening to the birds, watching dragonflies, and appreciating the small moments that are so easy to overlook. By the end of my residency, I realized I wasn't just seeing the landscape differently, I was experiencing it differently. This painting is my reminder that peace can be found in places that are wonderfully, beautifully alive.
Beyond Green is a series inspired by my artist residency at Whiterock Conservancy, where I explored the Iowa landscape through unexpected color.
