One of the things I find fascinating about ornamental kale is that its colors become even more remarkable as the temperatures drop. When much of the garden is fading, these plants are just beginning to show some of their most beautiful colors.
In What Winter Awakens, ruffled leaves in shades of purple, green, and teal surround a tightly curled center. Brilliant pink washes and white lines remain visible, revealing the beginnings of the painting beneath its more developed areas.
I chose this title because I love the idea that something beautiful can emerge from unexpected circumstances. What might seem like the end of a growing season can actually be the beginning of something extraordinary.
