One of my favorite things about painting at Whiterock Conservancy was watching the Raccoon River reflect whatever was happening in the sky. On this evening, the sunset filled the water with pinks and oranges that seemed to stretch across the entire landscape.
As I worked on this painting, I wasn't trying to recreate the scene exactly as it appeared. Instead, I wanted to hold onto that feeling of watching color move through the landscape, from the sky, into the river, and across the prairie. It became less about painting what was there and more about painting the experience of being there.
